Admissions Policy

Applying for a Reception place for September 2024.

If your child was born between 1st September 2019 and 31st August 2020, they will start reception class at the start of the new school year in September 2024.  The online application service has now closed (deadline for submissions was 15th January 2024).  Any applications received after the 15th January 2024 will be considered as late.  You may have registered an interest with us previously, but this is NOT an application for a school place.

To be considered for your preferred primary schools, you must have applied online or by filling in the Wigan Council primary school application form on time.  If you have selected our school as a preference, you must have also completed our supplementary form (below).  If you have not given this information, your child may be refused a place.  It is important that you read our school criteria (below) before making your application.

Returning Application Forms

Applications can be handed in to any Wigan Primary school and receipts will be issued by the school. These should be kept safe until letters of allocation are sent out.  However, the SUPPLEMENTARY FORM needs to be returned to Leigh St John's CE Primary School.  Those parents applying under criterion 3 (regular worship at St. Mary the Virgin, Leigh) should be aware of the 'signing' day for supplementary forms, which is Saturday 13th January 2024 between 9am and 1pm at the church.  Church warden - Mr Marsh - will ratify church attendance against weekly registers and sign forms accordingly.  Those applying under criterion 4 are advised to ensure that signed forms clearly indicate the six calendar months/dates the child attended the named church.

Parents and carers are advised to ensure that application forms and supplementary forms are submitted by the specified deadline to avoid disappointment.  Any application received after the deadline will be dealt with as a late application after all other applicants have been considered.

If supplementary forms are posted to the school, it is the responsibility of the applicant to check to ensure they have been received by our office team.

A Place is Offered!

When pupils are admitted to Leigh St. John's C.E. Primary School, parents and carers will receive a 'Welcome Pack' which will contain an invitation to our 'Welcome Meeting', as well as other documents and information to be returned.  In the Summer Term prior to their child starting school, parents and carers will be invited to attend a series of fun taster sessions with their child.  Parents and carers will be notified in advance of the dates and times of these.  The taster sessions which are known as 'BIG SCHOOL TIME' are a fabulous opportunity for children to make new friends and to get to know their teachers, as well as have a jolly good time playing in their new classroom.  These visits are also a valuable opportunity for parents and carers to meet up and to establish new friendships.
