  • Reception Smithills Farm trip

    Mon 22 Apr 2024

Wow, what an amazing day we’ve had at Smithills Farm! The sun has been shining and the children have been superstars. All children have used their listening ears, respectful of others on the farm and answered questions with some great answers!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Firstly we met our two guides: Caitlin and Taylor! They told us our itinerary for the day and gave us lots of information about all the animals we met! Our first activity was the tractor ride! We enjoyed going over the bumpy hills to meet the donkeys and we were able to feed them some bread for their breakfast! Our second activity was meeting the animals. We got to meet, stroke and EVEN hold lots of different farm animals like chicks, rabbits, owls, Shetland ponies and lots more! Next, we got to feed lots of animals. The children were super sensible and fed the animals their favourite foods by hand! They were super brave! What a lovely day we have had!

  • Wigan Dance Festival 2024

    Wed 13 Mar 2024

Wowza! Our St. John's Dance Squad totally rocked the stage tonight!

I was completely blown away not just by how incredible their dance was, but also by the fact that they were able to perform on such a huge stage! It took some serious effort, and they totally nailed it! What an amazing accomplishment!

A huge thank you to all the fantastic parents who made the journey over to Wigan this evening and provided the awesome pink clothing.

And a special shout-out to Miss Frain! She has worked incredibly hard over the past few weeks, making sure the group had loads of fun and that they absolutely owned the stage tonight.

Let's also give a big thanks to one of our incredible parents, who went above and beyond by making pink hair bows for everyone.

Our dance squad truly exceeded all expectations and made all of us incredibly proud! Keep up the amazing work!

  • Let Girls Play Event for International Women’s Day

    Fri 08 Mar 2024

Our Year 5 sports leaders were invited to take part in training through Wigan School Games. As part of their training, they were taught how to play and deliver games aimed at girls and based around football skills at Wigan Athletics youth training ground. The intention of the training was to provide the skills they would need to organise and deliver a festival specifically to encourage girls to get involved in playing and learning those football skills. On the 8th of March, the sports leaders delivered the festival of ‘Let Girls Play’ on International Women’s Day. They delivered a warm up and a number of activities such as ‘the great escape’, ‘cat and mouse’ and ‘dragons den’ all of which were based around football skills. They applied skills learned in their training to encourage game progression and how they could adapt the things they learned for the range of children in school from Reception age up to Year 6.They did an absolutely remarkable job and the festivities were enjoyed by all! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

  • Y1 Fieldwork Trip to Lilford Park

    Wed 14 Feb 2024

Year 1 went to Lilford Park to carry out some geography fieldwork. We were so impressed at how far they all walked! We think you might have some sleepy children tonight! Despite the rain, the children behaved impeccably and were super smiley throughout. They were a pleasure to spend time with.
Whilst at the park we carried out some data collection. This term we have been talking about how people spend their leisure time. We observed people in the park and the ways that they used the park for leisure time. We gathered this information using a tally chart and we will transfer this data into a pictogram.
We also thought about how different people would like to use the park depending on different age categories. The children put themselves in the shoes of other people and used the masks to view the park through the eyes of a grandma/grandad, teen boy/girl and a child girl/boy.
Our final activity was to sketch some of the human and physical features in the park to help us to make our map of Lilford Park back in class.
Before we headed back to class, we had time for a snack and a play on the playground.
    What a brilliant morning!

  • Y6 Manchester Museum Trip 🗿

    Tue 06 Feb 2024

We spent a fantastic day at Manchester Museum as we experienced what it would be like working as a curator responsible for creating a museum exhibit.

The children were challenged to answer the question: What is the most important artefact in the ancient Egyptian collection?

The children worked in small groups and each one was up given a theme that their artefact had to link to; the themes were rarity, story, material and beauty.

In the workshop the activity leader had selected four artefacts for the children to discuss and justify links to their theme. It was great to see the children using the source analysis skills to develop their understanding.

We then moved into the museum and the children looked at a larger collection of artefacts. Once again they had to choose an artefact that best suited their theme and they had to justify their opinion.

We then moved back to the classroom to compare our two chosen artefacts and make our final decision.

The children worked brilliantly as teams and showed a great understanding of historical source work.

We then spent the afternoon exploring the rest of the museum’s exhibits with the vivarium being a particular highlight. We were also treated to the impromptu dragon dance to celebrate the Chinese new year.

    A fantastic day all round!

  • Y3 Chester Trip

    Mon 05 Feb 2024

We have had a blast on our trip to Chester!
It was the perfect trip to learn more about our topic about the Romans. The museum educational team were blown away with how much the children could remember about our Roman’s topic.

When we arrived, we enjoyed a Roman soldier tour to the Roman amphitheatre in Chester. At the amphitheatre, the children completed a range of different soldier formations, and they had to defend their army line against the barbarians (school staff).

This afternoon, we enjoyed looking at a range of Roman artefacts and guessing what they were used for during the Roman period. After this, the children had an opportunity to take part in a range of challenges from dressing up as a Roman to building a Roman building.

Before we left, we had an opportunity to look around the two Roman museum rooms.

We had such an enjoyable trip!

  • Y1Bolton Museum Trip

    Fri 02 Feb 2024

We had a wonderful time at Bolton Museum. The children were impeccably behaved and a pleasure to spend time with. 🥰 When we first arrived we went to the aquarium and watched the different varieties of fish being fed. We then had our lunch with our friends. 💛 After lunch we went on a hunt around the different areas in the museum searching for a variety of items. We visited the nature gallery, the Egypt gallery, the art gallery and Bolton’s history museum. The children were brilliant history detectives! We then took part in a workshop based on childhoods in the past. The children learnt about the different games children played in the past and they had the opportunity to have a go at playing with some replica old fashioned toys.
We had a brilliant day and there were some very sleepy children on the coach on the way home. 😴😴

  • Staircase House Trip

    Sat 21 Oct 2023

What a fantastic day we had learning all about The Great Fire of London!🤩

Throughout the day, we completed lots of different activities to support us in developing our knowledge on The Great Fire of London. We focused on:

🔥Retelling the story of The Great Fire of London within the 17th century rooms at Staircase House.
🔥Dressing up and getting involved in role play finding out where, when and why the fire broke out.
🔥 Exploring what Samuel Pepys wrote about the fire and find out what an eye witness it.

During the afternoon, we learnt all about the fire marks in London in 1666 and learnt their meaning. We then spent some time creating our own fire marks. It was important that they were colourful so they could be seen. Year 2 did a fabulous job!✨

We also focused on what material the houses were made out of in London in 1666. We learnt that the houses were made from wattle and daub. We used clay to represent the daub. All the children worked hard to weave the wattle and mould the clay (daub) to ensure there were no gaps. They understood that by having no gaps this would stop the wind and raining coming through. Year 2 learnt that the fire spread quickly because the houses were made out of these materials. Everyone did an amazing job!🔥

Year 2 were fantastic all day and the ladies at Staircase House commented on their politeness, behaviour and enthusiasm to learn new facts. Well done Year 2- we are so proud of you!💛

  • Stoneage Workshop

    Mon 16 Oct 2023

Today, we have had a fantastic time taking part in our Stone Age workshop.

📍We started the workshop with a bone investigation, and we examined lots of Stones Age artefacts such as the tools they used and materials they used in order to survive.

📍We created our very own arrows using flint arrowheads and wood.

📍We all took part in drawing our very own cave drawings on slate using charcoal and chalk.

📍This afternoon, we took part in learning about key hunting techniques from the Stone Age such as archery. All children practised their archery skills by trying to hunt the animals like they would have done during the Stone Age.

It has been a fantastic fun-filled day, and all of the children enjoyed it!

  • Year 4 Fire Safety Trip

    Tue 10 Oct 2023

Wow! Year 4 have had a fantastic and very informative day today at Bury fire training station. This was lead by two fantastic fire men. The children had the opportunity to experience many activities such as how fire workers help people and how to keep safe in dangerous situations. They experienced answering 999 calls and how to administer CPR. They looked at identifying dangers within the home and how to avoid these happening. These were all delivered in realistic settings. It was quite the experience.
